Franklin Rudolf Ankersmit

Biopgraphical Sketch

Frank Ankersmit is a Dutch professor of History at Groeningen University who has written extensively on problems of textuality and reality in historical narratives.

Already his early work on Narrative Logic established some of the themes that he continued to pursue well into 2005: history as representation; the textuality of the historical narrative; the importance of metaphor as a bridging principle between the reality of the facts and the textuality of the historical representation; the supremacy of aesthetic innovation over factual enumeration to arbitrate between competing, factually equivalent, historical reconstructions.
